What it is
Eloquent is Google's dictation app. You talk, and it removes the ums and false starts and gives you clean, ready-to-use text. It runs speech recognition on your phone using Gemma models, so it can work without internet. You can switch on cloud mode for extra polish with Gemini.
Why people use it
- Speaking is faster than typing, so you write prompts, emails and notes quicker.
- Offline mode keeps voice data on your device, which matters for private client or business info.
- It is free, with no reported subscription or usage cap at launch.
How to get started
- On an iPhone, search 'Google AI Edge Eloquent' in the App Store and install it (iOS only at launch; Android was mentioned as coming).
- Open it, let it download the on-device model, and tap record.
- Speak naturally. When you pause, it cleans up the text.
- Use the output styles (such as key points, formal, short, long) to reshape the text.
- Add custom words (names, product terms). You can also let it pull vocabulary from your Gmail if you choose to.
Try this
(You speak this) Okay so I want a prompt that, um, makes a thirty second ad for a local bakery, warm tone, show the oven, the dough, and a customer smiling.
Dictate long, detailed prompts, then paste the cleaned text into FLUX, Higgsfield, or Claude.
Why it matters for business
This is an example of edge AI: the model runs on your device instead of in the cloud. Businesses like it for privacy, speed and lower server cost.
Full walkthrough: dictate better and faster
1. Install and prepare
- Download the app from the App Store (iPhone). Do the first setup on Wi-Fi, because it downloads a speech model to your phone.
- When iOS asks for microphone access, allow it. If you missed it, open iPhone Settings, find the app, and turn Microphone on.
- Decide whether to use offline mode only or to allow the cloud polish. Offline keeps your voice on the device. Cloud can improve the wording but sends data to Google, so read the app's privacy information first.
2. How to speak so the text comes out clean
- Say your point in complete thoughts, then pause. The app cleans up at pauses.
- Say names and numbers slowly and clearly. Check them afterward.
- Say punctuation-heavy ideas in plain words ("three things: first, second, third").
- Do not worry about "um." Removing those is the app's job.
3. Reshape the text
After you speak, use the output styles (for example key points, formal, short or long) to turn the same words into a different format. One dictation can become a quick note, a polished email, or a bullet list.
4. Add your own words
Add names, carrier names and product terms to the custom vocabulary so they are spelled right. Example for an insurance agent: plan names, carrier names, and local place names.
5. Use it with other AI tools
Dictate a long, detailed prompt, copy the cleaned text, and paste it into FLUX, Higgsfield or Claude. Long prompts get better results, and talking is the fastest way to write them.
6. Business workflow: after-call follow-up
- Right after a meeting, dictate three things: what was decided, what you promised, and the next step.
- Choose a short, professional style.
- Paste it into an email draft or your notes. Read it. Fix names, numbers and dates. Send.
7. Privacy and compliance
Do not dictate private client details (health information, Social Security numbers, policy numbers) into any app until you know where the data goes and your company or regulator allows it. Use offline mode when in doubt, and keep notes general.
Common problems
- No text appears: check microphone permission and that the model finished downloading.
- Wrong words: add them to custom vocabulary and speak more slowly.
- Noisy room: move closer to the phone or use earbuds with a microphone.
- Android user: the page says Android was mentioned as coming. Use your phone's built-in dictation until then.
Business use case
Scenario: A busy founder, consultant or insurance agent finishes a call and needs a clean follow-up email and a summary for the file.
How it works: Speak the main points right after the call. The app cleans up filler words and grammar, and you paste the result into email or a CRM, then check it before sending.
Measure success by: Minutes saved per follow-up, and how many follow-ups go out the same day.
Watch out for: Review every dictation for names, numbers and dates. In regulated fields, such as insurance, health and finance, do not dictate private client details into any tool until you know where the data goes.
